Dads and Doulas
“While the doula probably knows more than the partner about birth and maternity care, the partner knows more about the woman’s personality, likes, dislikes and needs. Moreover, he loves the woman more than anyone else there. The combination of partner and doula, along with a caring staff gives the woman the best chance of an optimal outcome.” Penny Simpkin, author of The Birth Partner.
Doulas are NOT meant to replace the partner. Doulas work to facilitate the bonding of woman and their partners during this intense time.
The presence of a doula allows the partner to relax and participate at the level that they are most comfortable with, reliving them of the pressure to know or do it all. Without a doula, partners are often expected to be the only support person.
A doula can allow the partner to take breaks, offer suggestions when they don’t know what to do, help them to understand what is happening to the mother physically, emotionally and physiologically as labour progresses.
When it comes to pregnancy, birth and parenting, partners are vital members of the mothers support team. They are actively involved in easing the mothes labour pain, welcoming the baby at the moment of birth, and helping to care for the newborn at home. Birth and postnatal doulas can help the partners experience this special time with confidence.
